Understanding Desk Mat Materials

The very first and essential desk mat characteristic to consider. It will define how comfortable and practical your new desk setup will turn out.

Synthetic Options for Affordability

Untitled

Synthetic desk mats are popular for their affordability and ease of maintenance. Made from materials like PU, vinyl, and faux leather, these mats are practical choices for those on a budget. They offer excellent mouse compatibility, making them ideal for gamers. Their water-resistant nature also simplifies cleaning and maintenance. However, synthetic mats can take time to lay flat, as they're often packaged rolled up. This can lead to curling edges and creases that might take weeks to smooth out. Additionally, they may emit an unpleasant odor initially, which dissipates after a few days. While they're not the most eco-friendly option due to their production involving crude oil, synthetic mats are available in a wide range of colors and designs, allowing for personalisation of your workspace.

Pros

  • Most affordable and common option on the market.
  • Best compatibility with a mouse and easy to write on.
  • Generally waterproof and easy to clean & maintain.
  • Available in many different colours & designs.
Cons
  • Not eco-friendly, as material uses crude oil for its production.
  • Material is usually of a mediocre quality and shows signs of wear and tear in less than a year.
  • Take time to lay flat on a surface. Creases could take weeks to fatten out.
  • Could have an unpleasant rubber/petrol smell last for a few days after unpacked.

    Genuine Leather for Luxury

Genuine leather desk mats exude luxury and sophistication, instantly elevating the look and feel of any workspace. Known for their premium quality, these mats offer durability and a distinctive leather aroma that adds a touch of elegance. Many genuine leather options come with additional features like built-in pencil holders and phone chargers, further enhancing their functionality. However, the high-quality material requires extra care, as hot objects can cause stains. They are also among the more expensive desk mat options, reflecting their superior craftsmanship and longevity. Despite their cost, genuine leather mats are an investment in both style and durability, lasting for many years. It's essential to consider the ethical implications, as these mats are made from animal skins, and tracking the production process for cruelty-free practices can be challenging.

    Pros

    • Luxury look & premium aesthetics.
    • High quality - will last decades.
    • Does not use oil / petrol or any other synthetic material in production.

      Cons

      • Expensive.
      • Due to properties on material, they require a little extra care.

        Eco-Friendly Choices for Sustainability

Eco-friendly desk mats are crafted from sustainable materials like cork, vegan leather, and plant-based linoleum. These options appeal to environmentally-conscious users seeking to minimize their ecological footprint. They offer a refreshing alternative to traditional materials, avoiding the use of crude oil or animal products. Although eco-friendly mats tend to be slightly more expensive than synthetic ones, their quality and sustainability make them a worthwhile investment. These mats often require careful maintenance, as their natural surfaces can be less resistant to stains and wear. Despite these challenges, their benefits extend beyond environmental impact, often reflecting superior craftsmanship and design. While the range of designs and colours can be limited compared to synthetic options, their minimalist aesthetic fits well in professional and creative environments, promoting a clean and focused workspace.

        Pros

        • Eco and animal friendly.
        • Made with quality in mind.

          Cons

          • Require extra care since they are not easy to clean.
          • Not many designs / colors available on the market.

Felt and Wool Felt Desk Mats for Comfortability

A choice for those prioritising coziness and comfort over everything else. They will keep your elbows and wrists comfortable when you are spending hours upon hours at your desk. But they require even more care than leather mats and you certainly don’t want to spill any drinks on them. Felt mats are also one of the most sustainable and eco-friendly options on the market. Their main downside is that they not very compatible with mouse.

            Pros

            • Eco and animal friendly.
            • Soft and comfortable.
            • Soft surface prevents tackiness between arms and desk surface.

              Cons

              • Difficult to clean.
              • Not water resistant.
              • No practical for writing on it.
              • Not mouse compatible.

Textile laminated foam rubber desk mats for Ergonomics

A lot less common type of desk mat and more widespread option in the PC gaming community due to their exceptional comfort. and ability to retain it for long hours. Sustainable options were non-existent until we got involved (which is the sole reason we started our business). It uses a high-density rubber foam made from crude oil, whereas we use a limestone based one, which is by far a much cleaner and nature-friendly option.

These mats are probably the most convenient type for those looking for an exceptional comfort, without sacrificing practicality and aesthetics. They do require a little extra care and are not cheap to make but are absolutely worth the money for the value they provide. The only real downside is their combination of thickness and softness is not easy to write on and will not be suitable supporting PC monitors with thin base or stands. Fusionstrike make them in a size that covers only the arm area without taking up the space reserved for a laptop or a monitor.

Foamed Rubber mats are laminated different kinds of fabric (natural, synthetic, recycled, mixed) and vary in feel & roughness. Such as super-stretch nylon and milk fiber are exceptionally pleasant to touch but are not very water resistant. Others are water resistant but not as pleasant to skin. However, the later ones are still more comfortable that their many textile and felt companions. Besides that, the foamed rubber itself is waterproof. Another amazing benefit of this type of mat is that its base material is naturally temperature controlling (hence why surfing and diving suits are made from it), meaning that it will reflect back the temperature of your arms all year around.

                Pros

                • The most comfortable desk mats on the market, perfect alternative to elbow / wrist supports.
                • Temperature control.
                • Aesthetically pleasant. Come in many colors and designs.
                • Smooth fabric lamination prevents tackiness between arms and desk surface or synthetic / leather mat.

                  Cons

                  • Material is made using crude oil. The only exception currently on the market is Fusionstrike's Desk Mat, which uses limestone to make the sponge.
                  • Require extra care, not the easiest to clean.
                  • No practical for writing on it.

Finding the Right Size and Shape

When selecting a desk mat, size and shape are crucial considerations. Most desk mats are available in standard rectangular shapes, catering to general workspace needs. However, the size should match your desk dimensions and intended use. For example, a large desk mat can accommodate both a keyboard and a mouse, perfect for gamers or those who need extra workspace.

Conversely, smaller mats might focus on providing comfort for the arms and wrists, such as the Original Fusionstrike’s Limestone Desk Mat, which is designed for ergonomic support.

Custom dimensions are also an option for those with unique desk layouts or specific aesthetic preferences. They allow for personalisation, ensuring the mat fits seamlessly into your workspace setup. Whether you choose a standard size or opt for customisation, aligning your desk mat with your workspace needs can enhance both comfort and functionality.

                    Design and Aesthetic Appeal

                    Minimalist vs. Vibrant Styles

When choosing a desk mat, style plays a pivotal role in aligning with your workspace's aesthetic. Minimalist designs are characterised by subtle colours and understated patterns, fostering a sense of calm and focus. These mats are ideal for professional environments or creative spaces where distraction-free work is paramount.

Conversely, vibrant styles bring energy and personality to a workspace. They feature bold colours, intricate patterns, or even customisable designs, making them popular among gamers and those seeking an inspiring and lively atmosphere. Vibrant designs can stimulate creativity and make a strong visual statement. The choice between minimalist and vibrant styles depends on personal taste and the ambiance you wish to create.

Whether you prefer the serene elegance of minimalism or the dynamic flair of vibrant designs, aligning your desk mat with your personal style can enhance both productivity and satisfaction in your workspace.

                    Edge Finishes and Custom Prints

The edge finish of a desk mat contributes significantly to its overall durability and aesthetic appeal. Stitched edges are commonly found on mats made from materials that might fray, adding a touch of sophistication while preventing wear and tear. These edges not only enhance durability but also contribute to a polished, finished look. In contrast, clean-cut edges offer a sleek and modern appearance, often seen in mats made from sturdy materials that naturally resist fraying.

For those seeking a personalised touch, custom prints are an attractive option. Advances in printing technology allow for intricate designs, logos, or personal artwork to be applied to the mat's surface. This customisation enables individuals to align their desk mat with personal style or brand identity, creating a unique and personalised workspace. Whether opting for stitched edges for durability or custom prints for personalisation, these features add significant value to desk mat design.

                    Exploring Extra Features

Some desk mat or desk pads come with one or another extra feature, let’s briefly go through the most common ones:

                    • Wrist support cushion – some higher tier desk mats come with inbuilt cushioned line that supports your wrists during typing on a keyboard.
                    • Anti-slip bottom – the most common one, every other desk mat / pad on the market has this feature. It helps to keep the mat in place when there is a lot of rapid mouse movement involved (such as gaming sessions).
                    • Cable management – a bit less common but very useful feature when you want to keep cables more organised and not being caught in the way of your cup of beverage or a mouse.
                    • RGB lighting – more common among gaming mats, this feature elevates gaming experience to another level. Keep in mind this mat requires a USB connection to a laptop or a PC in order for the lights to work.
                    • Inbuilt magnetic phone charger – a feature that is usually found in premium desk mats, it speaks for itself, however, just like RGB mat, it requires a USB connection.
