Desk pads, mats, blotters - are they worth it?

The modern workspace has evolved significantly over the years, especially in the last 50 years during which the western markets have been going through post-industrialization era, where offices are being built in places of factories and manufacturing units moved out to overseas. More companies accepting and normalizing working from home, which inspires employees, entrepreneurs, and solopreneurs to convert their bedroom, living room, or spare rooms, into a home office.

All of this contributes to ever growing demand for office accessories over the last 50 years. One of them being a desk mat, or a desk pad, or a wrist rest, there are many names, and they are all different products, each being perfect for its intended use.

Our focus lays on desk mats, particularly a 2 in 1 combination product – a wrist rest & desk mat. Our aim is to offer a product that delivers comfort to a working setup unlike most desk mat out there.

So, is it really worth getting a desk mat?

The short answer is yes. And here are the basic reasons:

1. Protection

One of the primary reasons why people get a desk mat is to protect their desks from wear and tear. Desks can easily get scratched or stained from daily use, from writing, eating, spilling drinks, or simply moving your mouse around. A quality desk mat provides a protective layer between your activities and your precious work surface. A very important aspect of a desk mat / pad is that it should not be able to freely move around on a desk, as many of options available on the market do. In other words, it should have a non-slip base. Otherwise, it could easily trap anything underneath that will end up scratching your desk while moving.

2. Enhanced Comfort

If you spend long hours at your desk typing or using your mouse, you'll appreciate the added comfort that comes with using a desk mat made from spongy material and covered with fabric soft and comfortable to skin. The soft surface reduces pressure on your wrists when typing or using the mouse, which can help prevent discomfort and repetitive strain injuries over time.

3. Improved Aesthetics

A well-chosen desk mat can significantly enhance the aesthetics of your workspace. Whether you prefer a sleek leather look or something more colorful and vibrant, there's likely to be a design out there that matches perfectly with your office decor. Fusionstrike range of desk mats is expanding to cater for most common preferences.

4. Better Mouse Tracking

If you're using an optical or laser mouse, you'll find that it tracks much better on a smooth surface like a desk mat compared to directly on the table surface which may be uneven or reflective.
Although, soft and fabric laminated mats are not perfect choice for when you need something to improve mouse tracking, they can still do a good job if it is not the most important factor when choosing a desk mat. But if you are a PC gamer or graphic designer where mouse movement demands to be perfect and accurate, mat with coarse fabric will not be a good choice. Fusionstrike mat uses a high thread count nylon fabric for its lamination, which makes the surface very smooth, but still not as perfect as a PU or genuine leather mat / pad.

5. Organization

Some larger-sized desk mats come with built-in features like pen holders or pockets for storing small items like business cards or paper clips - perfect for keeping your workspace tidy! Fusionstrike mat is designed to keep things simple. It is made primarily to serve as a support to arms without sacrificing the aesthetic of a work desk and instead enhancing it.
