Desk Mat, Desk Pad & Desk Blotter: What’s the difference?
Rus RiverwoodShare
Most people think these are just different names for the same thing. They’re not. Even many brands themselves get it wrong and name their product incorrectly unless it's a brand whose focus lies predominantly on desk mats.
Choosing the wrong type of product can leave you with a desk that looks good, but feels terrible after a few hours. We will talk here about every type, what they’re actually for, and where each one falls short.
Desk Pads / Extended Mouse Pads
These are the ones you will come across most often. They're cheap and dominate the market. It is essentially a large fabric surface designed primarily for mouse precision. It is essentially an oversized mouse pad that covers most of your operating desk surface. They are perfect for short term work sessions. They are also great for amateur PC gamers since they are made from harder materials allowing perfect mouse glide & laser pickup.
Typically made from materials like PU which are derived from petrochemicals (crude oil) making them one of the least eco friendly options. But there are a lot of exceptions (mentioned below). The material also makes them versatile for printing on surface, which is why they come in many different colours and designs.
Common materials:
- Polyurethane (PU). Softer but less durable.
- Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). More durable but less comfortable.
- Natural Rubber. Eco option made from tree latex.
- Linoleum. Durable & made from natural materials.
- Genuine Leather. Luxury mats made from leftover animal hide.
- Vegan / Faux Leather. Essentially a PU mat made to resemble genuine leather.
Main Pros:
- Great for all around general use.
- Very good mouse tracking.
- Waterproof & Easy to clean.
Main Cons:
- Minimal or no cushioning for wrist and elbows.
- Material can feel tacky on arms.
- Prone to creases and takes weeks to uncurl after unpacking. Some never fully uncurl.
Desk Mats
These are called Desk Mats for a reason. And that's because they are generally softer and thicker compared to desk pads. They are more expensive but worth every penny for their increased comfort. Manufacturers put more time and effort into making sure the product is a quality one and will last years. Just like desk mats, these can be either completely synthetic or made from natural materials.
Desk Mats are more suitable for people working at their desk for long hours. But also if you are a serious and dedicated gamer, you would want to go with a desk mat or a special mouse compatible fabric or a foam mat, to add a level of comfort. Which is not something a desk pad would provide.
Common materials:
- Felt. Made from wool. Cosy and very comfortable.
- Microfibre. Made from polyester. Very comfortable.
- Neoprene. Superior comfort level. Quality depends on lamination fabric.
- Limestone Neoprene. Higher quality & nature friendly option of Neoprene.
- Cork. Eco-Friendly & Sustainable.
Main Pros:
- Ergonomic & provide an enhanced comfort, especially for long hours at a desk.
- Overall better looking and uncurl faster and doesn't have creases.
Main Cons:
- Mostly not waterproof & harder to clean.
- Not suitable for writing on it.
Desk Blotter
Desk blotter is a traditional, rigid version of desk pad. Designed for writing, sometimes featuring sides to hold paper. They are usually made from genuine leather.
Wrist Rest
Ergonomic accessories designed to provide comfort and support during extended periods of computer use or desk work. They can help reduce the risk of repetitive strain injuries (RSI) and prevent conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome. They are designed to provide a soft and comfortable place for your elbows and wrists to rest while you work at your desk or computer.
Elbow rests have cushioned or padded surfaces that either lie on a desk or attach to the front edge of a workstation. Wrist rests are commonly placed in front of a keyboard or a mouse, and they come in smaller sizes. They are mostly made from synthetic or less commonly, natural fabric.
Their downside is that they not as aesthetically pleasing as desk mats and they could easy be ‘in the way’ of something you’re working on, making them less practical solution.
2 in 1 Mouse mat?
But what do you do it you want a proper comfort for your arms without sacrificing the look and practicality of your workstation? Is there a product that combines all of these essential features? This is where Fusionstrike's Limestone Desk Mat comes in. The first and so far, the only product in the market that delivers. We’ve taken an original approach to finding a material that would be a perfect fit, we’ve looked around and focused on spongy rubber, particularly one that uses raw limestone as a base material.
